More than just a place for art lovers to immerse themselves in creative beauty, The Gallery at Ballito Lifestyle Centre is also a platform for local artists to showcase their talent
Wendy Fundudis is a South African artist whose lifelong passion for art and nature has found full expression in her richly textured acrylic works. A retired school principal, Wendy embraced her artistic calling in earnest following her retirement in 1997, transitioning into a full-time practice that blends personal inspiration with technical exploration.
Largely self-taught—though art was one of her matriculation subjects—Wendy’s creative journey has been shaped by continuous learning and a deep engagement with artistic communities. For seven years, she served as President of the North Coast Artists in KwaZulu-Natal, curating monthly artist demonstrations that exposed members to a wide range of media and techniques. These sessions not only enriched her own artistic vocabulary but also nurtured a thriving culture of collaboration and exhibition.
Her medium of choice is acrylics, prized for their versatility and responsiveness. Whether applied in translucent washes akin to watercolour or built up in rich, impasto layers, Wendy approaches each painting with a reverence for process—believing that the depth of an acrylic work lies in its layering and cannot be hurried. Her work spans a range of styles, unified by a sensitivity to colour, composition, and emotional resonance.
Wendy has completed numerous commissions, including over 18 large-scale nautical-themed acrylic ink paintings for a boutique guesthouse in La Lucia, KZN. Her work also graces private estate homes and has been collected by clients in England, Ireland, Wales, New Zealand, and Denmark. Each piece reflects not only her technical proficiency but also the joy and fulfilment she finds in her daily practice. Now based in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, Wendy continues to create with passion and purpose, exhibiting regularly and connecting with collectors both locally and abroad.
