About - The Gallery

The Gallery at Ballito Lifestyle Centre is a creative space dedicated to celebrating art in all its forms. Established as a pop up in 2020 by KZN North Coast based artist, Jane Digby, The Gallery became a platform where local and emerging artists could showcase their talent, share their stories and connect with the Ballito community. Today, that vision continues in a permanent space under the direction of Sarah O’Reilly and The Gallery team.

Located within The Studios, The Gallery forms part of a beautifully designed, multi-functional space that places art, design, wellness and lifestyle at the heart of the experience. Incorporating an eclectic mix of bespoke stores and personalized spaces. The Studios delivers an interesting and intimate shopping experience. A mixed-use mezzanine level features health and fitness studios and collaborative meeting spaces, with this energy being transferred into to retail space below, so that shoppers can enjoy the vibe and vitality that is generated. A small bespoke coffee shop completes this space in which you can indulge, pamper, treat and appreciate yourself.

Exhibitions at The Gallery change every 2 months, each one centred on a unique theme that bring fresh perspectives and new voices to the space. New exhibitions are launched alongside First Thursdays event which culminates in an evening of live music, good food and connection. Together, The Gallery and The Studios create a community-driven hub where visitors can discover unique concepts, enjoy workshops and demos, or simply connect, explore and be inspired.

With a background rooted in both creativity and education, Sarah O'Reilly brings warmth and vision to The Gallery. Her love for art was nurtured as a child in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, surrounded by her mother's colourful sewing room and beautiful garden where she spent many hours as a child. After completing her Fine Arts degree with honours at Stellenbosch University, Sarah worked with her mum for two years, running a busy flower and decor business and later becoming a high school art teacher. Following her move to Ballito in 2017, she taught at Ashton International College, where her passion for guiding young creatives grew ever stronger.

In 2023, Sarah stepped into the role of curator and manager of The Gallery, taking the reins from founder and well-known artist Jane Digby. Today, she curates exhibitions, sources artists, develops themes and creates opportunities for the community to engage with art in meaningful ways.

“Art feeds your soul, "she says. "This space allows you to slow down and truly take it in, and in our fast-paced, chaotic and demanding world, art asks nothing of you. Just come in and take what you need from the work.”

Born in Kenya, David's artistic journey began with hand-painted Coco-Cola billboards and shopfronts before life brought him to South Africa more than two decades ago. What started as a holiday became a turning point, eventually leading him back to his passion for art.

He was introduced to local art scene by fellow Kenyan artist Wakaba Mutheki. “Wakaba introduced me to the art world in South Africa. He was working for a gallery in Ballito looking for artists, so I gave him my portfolio and got the job soon afterwards.” Says David. He then went on his own as a freelance artist and later ran a framing and art shop in Ballito.

Since joining The Gallery in 2020, David has become an integral part of the team, prepping walls for exhibitions, assisting with artist sourcing and guiding visitors through the space. With his wealth of expertise and warm, conversational approach, he ensures that every guest feels welcome, whether browsing, learning or purchasing art.

Bonile brings determination, ambition and uniquely creative spirit to The Gallery. Though not a visual artist himself, his passion for poetry, literature and debate have shaped his ability to connect deeply with people and ideas.

After growing up in Matatiele and later Tongaat, Bonile went on to study politics, law and psychology at Rhodes University. During his holidays, he worked at The Studios at Ballito Lifestyle Centre, where he was introduced to The Gallery team. Stepping into a full-time role, he now supports Sarah and David with sales and administration while continuing his postgraduate studies in Psychology.

Bonile's love for creativity and his belief in the healing power of art make him a natural fit in The Gallery environment. His warm energy and thoughtful perspective add depth to the visitor experience, creating a space that feels both inspiring and restorative.

First Thursdays at The Studios

Presented as an opportunity to “connect with your tribe and soak up the vibe”, ‘First Thursdays’ is a full-day concept event at The Studios on the First Thursday of every month, with extended trading hours to 8.30 pm for evening browsing and shopping. The evening comes alive with the launch of The Gallery’s latest exhibition, live music, delicious food and drinks, wine tastings and a vibrant community atmosphere, with a few surprises always in store!
