More than just a place for art lovers to immerse themselves in creative beauty, The Gallery at Ballito Lifestyle Centre is also a platform for local artists to showcase their talent
Born on 29 April 1998 in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, Asiphile Luthuli is a South African fine artist who later relocated to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. His passion for art emerged while watching his brother draw and by the age of eight, he had discovered his own talent for drawing and knew he wanted to dedicate his life to art.
Asiphile holds a Diploma in Fine Art from the Durban University of Technology, and his artistic practice primarily involves charcoal and paint. His work delves into deeply personal and emotional themes, with a particular focus on emotional turmoil and mental health. “My work explores the concept of inner peace. I’m interested in observing and reflecting on how people respond to stress and depression, and how these internal struggles can affect their surroundings and the atmosphere they live in. Through my art, I aim to offer a sense of understanding and hope—to encourage people to confront and manage their daily struggles. I believe that when we deal with the pressures of each day, we build the emotional resilience needed to face tomorrow.”
Asiphile’s work is currently part of the gallery’s collection and is exhibited in selected exhibitions throughout the year, giving visitors ongoing access to his powerful and introspective pieces. This focus on mental health is deeply personal: his sister struggled with depression and was unable to access the support and therapy she needed, which resulted in lasting emotional suffering. His work serves, in part, as a tribute to her and to others who face similar challenges.
His works are predominantly large-scale charcoal drawings, often using muted tones to evoke heaviness and introspection, while incorporating bright colours as symbols of hope and joy; reminders that, no matter how difficult life may feel, it is never too late to find happiness and inner peace. Through his art, Asiphile invites viewers to reflect on the internal landscapes of human emotion, encouraging empathy, awareness, and emotional resilience.
