Jane Alexader is a Durban based oil painter whose relationship with art began at the age of five. From these early years, painting became a source of joy and freedom, an experience she has consciously carried with her into adulthood. This sense of play and curiosity remains central to her practice, grounding her work in both intuition and emotional honesty.
After a five-year hiatus, jane returned in 2003, a urning point that allowed her to recommit fully to her creative life. She is now grateful to be working as a full-time artist devoting her time and energy to the continual evolution of her practice.
Earlier in her career, Jane focused on large scale portraiture, exploring the presence and psychology of the human figure. Over time, however, her work was shifted toward landscape and abstraction, a transition she describes as both freeing and meditative. In these works, she experiments with varied forms of mark-making, bold and unexpected bursts of colour, unusual textures, and areas of flat colour. A recurring visual dialogue between vertical and horizontal lines brings structure and rhythm to her compositions.
Jane’s paintings invite the viewer into a completive space, where colour, texture and movement echo the quiet joy that first drew her to art as a child.
Jane is an oil painter based in Durban. Her love affair with art began as early as 5 years old and she has tried to carry the joy she found in creating as a child with her into adulthood.
After a five-year hiatus from painting she picked up her brushes in 2003 and is grateful to be concentrating on painting full time.
Earler in Jane's career, she created large-scale portraits, however as time has progressed, she has fallen in love with landscape and abstraction. She finds this freeing and meditative. Jane enjoys experimenting with different means of mark making, playing with bright pops of colour, with unusual textures and flat areas of colour. She loves the contrast of vertical and horizontal lines.
