Lindsay Philips is a ceramic artist. Surrounded by the Dlinza Forest, she draws inspiration from the quiet rituals of daily life, the age-old question of what to do with complicated emotions, as well as the natural and social debris. Clay has always drawn her in for the same reasons that captivate children: anything is possible, and it’s okay to make a mess sometimes. Forgiving and intuitive, it has become both her anchor and her metaphor, reminding her and those who encounter her to work to slow all the way down.

Hand building with stoneware, Lindsay favours metal oxides that emphasise the marks of making, to finish her surfaces. Her pieces range from witty, text-covered pots and doll heads that nod to our inner child, to conceptual works exploring presence and connection. Her teaching practice carries the same philosophy, shaped by her mother’s words: Ï should have a degree in craft as therapy.” In her studio, students of all ages are invited into playful, patient spaced where mistakes are part of the story.

Alongside her ceramics, Lindsay writes poetry and collects oddities - photographs of dead insects, skeleton leaves, fragments of broken pottery, words tucked away for later use. These quiet obsessions spill back into her making, shaping a practice that is as much about observation and story as it is about form and function.
