Paula Breetzke is a painter based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. After completing a BCom and postgraduate degree in Finance, followed by a Diploma in Property Valuation, she worked in the valuation industry for nearly a decade before transitioning to exploring life through art in 2016. Her practice spans various mediums, with a recent passion for oil paint.

Paula moved to the North Coast on KZN in July 2021, and her work has been deeply shaped by her subsequent surroundings. The proximity to the ocean has brought a sense of calm and introspection, fostering self-acceptance and authentic self-expression. She draws inspiration from nature, creating semi-abstract depictions of lush seaside vegetation, ocean waves, and the celestial interplay of sun and moon. Through these works, she captures the vibrancy of the world while exploring themes across the spectrum of human experience.

Paula views each piece as a journey of discovery, a continuous exploration of her own artistic voice. She delights in experimenting with colour, texture, and brushstroke, constantly challenging the limits of her practice. Her process mirrors the wisdom of Jacob Banks: “What I’ve learnt from the ocean… how to dance & rejoice in the motion,” and the pursuit of self-realisation echoed by Miles Davis: “It takes a long time to sound like yourself.”

As an artist, Paula believes in the power of connection and witnessing, resonating with David Whyte’s insight: “The ultimate touchstone of friendship is… the privilege of having been seen by someone and the equal privilege of being granted the sight of the essence of another.” Her work is a reflection of her personal journey—an exploration of life, growth, and the delicate beauty of the world around her.

Paula’s art is included in group exhibitions at the gallery throughout the year, contributing to a dynamic dialogue with other artists and the public while continually evolving her unique visual language.
