Petra Gevers

Petra Gevers’ art radiates energy and movement, with bold strokes and textured layers that reflect both her instinctive style and her reverence for the natural world. While her work celebrates the individuality of living forms, it also carries an urgency, an awareness of how fragile life has become in a changing environment. Her paintings are at once a celebration and a record, a way of capturing what may be slipping from view. Petra’s path has never been linear. She first studied architecture but soon realised that its rigid frameworks didn’t suit her immediate, expressive creativity. Choosing instead to pursue Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT, she found in painting a discipline that allowed for both structure and spontaneity.

Her career reflects a kaleidoscope of creative ventures. After art school, she hand-painted textiles with Renaissance-inspired designs and later co-founded a design business with her sister, crafting driftwood lamps and chandeliers admired even at the highest level. She has also illustrated children’s works and experimented with watercolour and pastel—each phase feeding her restless curiosity and widening her artistic language.

Now fully dedicated to painting, Petra embraces the immediacy of the brushstroke, allowing imperfection and intuition to shape her work. Having lived in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and abroad, she has now rooted herself in Sheffield, where she thrives within a supportive artistic community while keeping close ties to her South African heritage.

Her paintings are showcased at The Gallery through selected exhibitions each year, where they invite viewers to reflect on life’s delicate balance between vitality and vulnerability.
