Born in Durban, Sam Pitout’s earliest memories are rooted in the sea, a presence that has never left her after her family moved to the Natal Midland when she was eleven. Growing up inland, she carried with her a longing for the ocean, its rhythms and fluidity later becoming central to her artistic language. From childhood, Sam found joy in creating, studying art as a school subject, but initially chose a different path at university, completing a degree in social science.
After graduating, she felt something missing from her life, a void she could not name until she was introduced to sculpture. She completed a year-long internship at Falconer Foundry under the late Dave Falconer, where she discovered her love of working with form and material. That experience became the foundation of her artistic journey, though her path would take unexpected turns.
A decade marked by personal trauma eventually drew her to ceramics. By what she describes as divine providence, Sam met ceramicist Tim Van Vuuren, who encouraged her to begin working with clay. Her first pot collapsed, but instead of being disheartened, she found healing in the process itself. The tactile nature of clay-its capacity to yield, shift and demand patience—offered her both restoration and expression. It was through perseverance that she gradually developed her own voice as a sculptor.
Today, Sam’s work is deeply informed by the sea she grew up longing for. Her sculptures capture movement and rhythm, embodying the sense of flow that defines the natural world. Through both clay and sculpture, she translates this motion into form, creating works that invite contemplation and stillness while also celebrating life’s vitality. For Sam, creativity is inseparable from faith: she regards the ability to create as a divine gift and encourages others to embrace their own creative calling as a way of healing and renewal.
Her works are showcased throughout The Gallery, a space that is dedicated to connecting artists and audiences in meaningful ways. In keeping with The Gallery’s ethos, Sam’s practice reflects not only the personal and spiritual dimensions of art but also its capacity to spark dialogue, evoke emotion, and create spaces of encounter.
