Sharon Paterson is a self-taught potter and stained-glass artist whose artistic journey began in her 30s. Growing up surrounded by her mother’s artistry, she developed an early love for creating and experimenting with materials. Her dedication to art led her to open a coffee and arts-and-crafts shop in Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga, where she spent 24 years producing functional pottery with a playful twist.

Over time, Sharon expanded her practice to include intricate hand-sculpted works and Japanese Raku firing, exploring the elemental forces of earth, fire, air, and water. Her Raku pieces embrace the unpredictability of the firing process, embodying the philosophy of “happiness in the accident,” while her experiments with Obvara firing produce unique textures and finishes.

Sharon is best known for her ceramic pangolins, capturing the creatures defensive curl and delicate presence, raising awareness about one of Africa’s most trafficked species. She is also recognised for her humorous and bold ‘Fat Lady’ series, which has been featured on The Real Housewives of Durban. Her work combines texture, pattern, and storytelling, reflecting a playful yet thoughtful approach to ceramics.

Since relocating to Ballito, Sharon has shared her knowledge with local artists and enthusiasts through pottery and Raku Workshops, fostering creativity, collaboration, and community engagement. She also co-runs Curiosity African Boutique, a platform supporting local artists to create, display and sell their work. Her pieces are available throughout the year at The Gallery, where they align with the space’s ethos of celebrating individuality, craftmanship, and artistic dialogue.
