Siyabonga Ngubane is a true child of Edendale, KwaZulu Natal, whose artistic journey began against quiet odds. Growing up in schools without art classes and with no materials beyond a simple ballpoint pen, he nevertheless drew constantly, guided by instinct, discipline, and an unwavering need to make images. This determination, paired with an evident natural talent, led him to the centre of visual arts at the university of KwaZulu-Natal, where he graduated with an honours degree in 2018.

During his studies, Siyabonga experimented with various artistic mediums, but it was lino printing that he found his most authentic form of expression. Working directly onto lino, he draws and carves intricate designs, developing distinctive textures before pulling prints on paper. The physical act of carving becomes an extension of his introspective nature, methodical, patient and deeply considerate.

A quiet observer, Siyabonga is interested in people, human behaviour and emotional response. Much of his work reflects the central role of women in society, shaped by his upbringing by his mother and grandmother, who instilled in him values of respect, resilience and dignity. These influences surface in his imagery through powerful yet tender narratives.

Siyabonga’s finely crafted lino prints are rich in mood, emotion and meaning. With their layered symbolism and technical precision, his work continues to resonate strongly with viewers and are increasingly sought after by collectors who recognise the depth and integrity of his practice.
