OFFICIALLY LAUNCHING THURSDAY 5TH OF FEBRUARY AT 6PM IN COLLABORATION WITH FIRST THURSDAYS AT THE STUDIOS
The Gallery presents DE/MATERIALIZE, a contemporary group exhibition bringing together textile art, painting, sculpture, drawing, and mixed media. Running from 5 February to 23 March, the exhibition explores transformation; what happens when materials shift, soften, unravel, or are reimagined, and how meaning can deepen in that process.
DE/MATERIALIZE is not about reduction or minimalism. It is about change. Artists work in the space between form and formlessness, presence and absence; allowing materials to fragment, dissolve, or evolve. Across disciplines, the exhibition invites a quieter way of looking, where gesture, memory, and intention take precedence over spectacle. Textile art forms a central thread within the exhibition through the participation of the National Fiberworks Group. Long associated with function and domestic space, textiles are presented here as powerful contemporary expressions, rich with labour, history, identity, and human touch. Through fabric, thread, and process, artists explore how meaning can be carried, altered, and gently released.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, 5 February, coinciding with The Studios First Thursday at Lifestyle Centre. The evening begins at 6pm and will feature a wearable art fashion show, showcasing the diverse and experimental textile works produced by members of the National Fiberworks Group. Adding to the evening is live music by Quiet Storm, complemented by a curated wine tasting experience by Lifestyle Tops. A selection of food and beverages will also be available for purchase.
Rather than spectacle, De/Materialize offers a slower encounter. Inviting viewers to pause, to look closely, and to notice what lingers when materials shift. It is a space for reflection, subtle transformation, and quiet presence. The Gallery is located at The Studios, Lifestyle Centre, Ballito. Open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
