ROOTED

Officially launching 27 March and running until 31 May 2026

In a world that feels increasingly fast, fragmented and uncertain, ROOTED invites a return – to ground, to body, to breath. ROOTED explores the importance of grounding ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally. It considers what it means to stand steady amidst movement and to remain anchored while the world shifts around us. The exhibition reflects on grounding as both a personal and collective act. To be rooted is not to be rigid, but to be connected; to place, to memory, to process and to self. For many of the participating artists, the act of making becomes a form of grounding. Participating artist Sarah Kelly reflects: “Being rooted as an artist means returning to rhythm, repetition and the physical act of making. My practice is grounded through movement and structure – through layering paint, observing the natural world and allowing the work to evolve slowly. It is less about stillness and more about building stability through consistent creative ritual.”

ROOTED also speaks to a deeper truth: creativity is inherent. It exists within us from birth. Though life may distance us from it, it remains waiting beneath expectation, beneath productivity, beneath noise. To reconnect with creativity is to reconnect with something fundamental.

Participating artist Jane Digby shares: “The theme has quite literally taken me on a journey – reflecting on my early childhood, identity, memories, and the psychological foundations of my life. Using my obsession with paint to explore these ‘uprooted’ emotions has been a process of unearthing, resulting in intuitive abstraction and a growing curiosity about the deep interconnectedness beneath the surface that binds us all.”

Through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, ROOTED offers viewers a space to pause, reflect and reconnect – inviting consideration of what anchors us, and what nourishment we draw from our unseen roots.

The Gallery is located at The Studios, Lifestyle Centre, Ballito. Open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
