Inspired by the annual migration of barn swallows from the shores of Ballito to distant regions across the globe, the Taking Flight exhibition draws a gentle parallel between natural and human movement. In the natural world, migration is instinctive, necessary and often regarded with a sense of wonder. We pause to witness it. We travel to observe it. We recognise its beauty.

Taking Flight asks us to extend that same sense of curiosity toward human movement. Across the world and within our own communities, people move for many reasons; safety, opportunity, family, survival. These journeys are complex and deeply individual, shaped by circumstance rather than choice alone. Without seeking to define or speak for these experiences, the exhibition creates space to consider them with greater care and understanding.
